Here’s your chance once again to be part of something big(ger). Join with some of Seattle’s key players in an exciting event that will amplify the impact of your gift to us. GiveBIG is a community-wide giving challenge created by The Seattle Foundation that increases the size of your donation to us.

All online donations will stretch to share distribution of $500,000. If you donate $10 it just might be $15! Any amount helps! Learn all the ways GiveBIG will grow your generosity.

And to give you a little something special to focus your generosity on, we’re thrilled to announce the re-launch of the MMC Goat program – supporting of our benevolence programs for the truly indigent (those unable to afford even lowest of fees on our sliding scale). Goats in rural Kenya are, in truth, little bank accounts. We sell them for $50, but their impact on the ground is more like a $5,000 deposit in the bank. And with the GiveBIG campaign, now’s the time to invest in a “benevolent” goat. Buy one for yourself, one for Mother’s Day – for any reason. Because goats purchased today are simply worth more – when you donate between 7 a.m. and midnight through our page in The Seattle Foundation’s Giving Center.

So, get a goat – then rally your friends to support Mama Maria today through Facebook or Twitter (#GiveBig).

Thank you for GivingBIG!

This is huge for a small operation like Mama Maria, as the lion’s share of our services are done on an outpatient basis. And, as an even further benefit, serving as the only accredited rural healthcare program in the immediate region, MMC’s “catchment” area covers a great distance – thereby allowing more people the opportunity to come to us for treatment, and for us to receive greater funding from the government.

This is an enormous “win-win” for us and the people we serve.

Question: What’s scarier than a mosquito?

Answer: Dying from of one.

Halloween vampires have got nothing on mosquitoes – at least not in Sub-Saharan Africa. And Africa’s cast of monsters – malaria, malnutrition, HIV, diarrhea, cholera, famine, and their friends – don’t just scare. They go for the kill.

MMC founder, Peter Kithene, lost six of his ten siblings before turning 12. By age 13 he no longer had parents.

Turns out statistics are actual people. But statistics can be changed.

Take advantage of our dollar-for-dollar match and give today.

Proposal: In this season of lattes and hot chocolate, skip your beverage of choice this week. Then, donate that amount.

With October’s dollar-for-dollar match, your pumpkin spice latte or glass of merlot can literally prevent six nightmares from coming true.

Back-of-the-Envelope Math
1 Latte = 6 kids who don’t die from malaria
And 6 families who won’t have to plan a funeral.

… Afford to give more? Great. Now’s your chance. Double-down with our October match and make it count. We have $1500 of matching funds to leverage.

Please, let’s give trick or treat a whole new meaning this year.

Today MMC received its biggest news in quite some time – our flagship clinic in Muhuru Bay officially landed accreditation with Kenya’s National Hospital Insurance Fund. This means the clinic will receive reimbursement on medical fees for all who carry an insurance card (e.g. those employed by the government – teachers, policemen, etc., and others insured with the plan). In addition to being able to serve even more people in need, this accreditation is the final critical piece to our sustainability puzzle and has enormous impact on operations on the ground. While the process was somewhat laborious, we are honored to be among the select few Kenyan institutions awarded with this privilege. Thank you all for your help to get us here!

Having gotten through this initial hurdle, approval with the government on subsequent clinics should come more easily in the future. So … next steps: creating a robust capacity building plan, including a team to begin the work of scaling this completely innovative and successful model. Stay tuned!
